Question of the day: Would you save the life of a hornet stuck in a spider's nest or let a spider have a good meal? This was my dilemma this morning. Don put a rocking recliner in our room (which originally I was opposed to but I have come to use quite a bit) that looks out the sliding glass door that goes to the lanai from our bedroom. I saw a hornet fly up and get trapped in a spider's nest (and before anyone asks....yes, I do sweep the spider webs periodically...have you seen how fast a spider can make a web?).
Anyway, I watched the hornet struggle for a few minutes. I saw a spider scurry out from where it was hiding to check it's meal. The hornet struggled some more scaring the spider back into hiding. I thought wether or not to set the hornet free. However, after about 5 minutes of struggling it freed itself! I clapped (on the inside) for her determination (yes, I said "her").
Thank you for reading my deep thought. Reply if you wish. My sisters said that only three people read my blog. I don't think that is the case....so come one, come all....

Do not hinder the cycle that it nature, grasshopper. (besides, hornets are scary and gross!)
i agree with the young lady above. hornets are gross. if there were a hornet nest, you wouldn't hesitate to to saturate it with a can of Raid Hornet Killer. So, my question is this: why not just let the spider have her way? Although I think both are disgusting, the spider is of greater benefit to me. The spider eats other bugs. What does a hornet do? Invade your grill maybe? Ultimately, aren't you killing both? Perhaps the hornet damaged a wing while being trapped. he will die shortly because of this. And aren't you removing those spider webs? The spider may die from this as well.
It reminds me of the spider on my patio this morning. Last night, I looked out the bedroom doorwall (yes, both doorwalls, the living room and bedroom, go to the same patio)and saw a spider suspended from the patio above. I thought to myself..."how odd is this?!"
This morning I looked out the window and saw the same spider in what i thought was the same spot. after a few minutes, i saw something glimmer in the sunshine and i realized then that she was not in the same spot, rather she had created an entire web in one night!! i went outside to further admire her work. I sprayed the web with a bit of water so that I could see it in all its glory. I was so proud of the fantastic creation this small, yet disgusting, spider had created. I wanted to leave her alone and let her catch a magnificant feast!!
I guess I really didn't think of HOW this web was hanging, in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. I reached up to water my flowers and something stuck to my hand. It was the lone strand of webbing that was holding her beautiful labor of love up. I instantly knew what happened. I looked over at her and saw her new web crumble as she scurried towards safety. What took her an entire evening to create, took me only a second to destroy.
I felt horrible. I almost shed a tear but then I remembered that the patio belongs to me. ME. Only I can create an environment in which to destroy life. Tough luck, Ms. Spider.
in addition....if you would like me to continue leaving responses to your blogs, I suggest you steer away from posting pictures of things that have the potential of making me vomit.
thankyouverymuch
HaHa...nice post, Ms. Eastman! I enjoyed it thoroughly (actually chuckled out loud).
I cannot promise not to post that which will make you upchuck. Whatever suits my fancy at the present time goes to my blog. Tough luck, Ms. Spider(killer!).
I know you'll be back. YOU WILL BE BACK BECAUSE YOU DESIRE TO SEE PICTURES OF MY CHILDREN! I come back to see your witiful (is that actually a word?) responses.
Damn you Paige. I was going to say something and follow it up with "grasshopper." And yes, hornets are scary and gross!
Personally, I think you need some bats. Bats rock. They love bugs. Maybe you need some anteaters too.
Darla lights to sit in the window and watch the lightening bugs.
Eww, now I itch.
PS--new blog. Click on my pic.
you must be tired. "darla lights" ?? didn't you mean darla LIKES?
I would have grasped the hornet from the web and eaten him myself.
By the way, please don't put up any more pictures of me walking around in my Speedos. Old people have a right to be pathetic.
